From Bankruptcy to $290K in 9 Months: How This Couple Built Their Dream Business

Picture this: You’re standing in a bankruptcy office, unable to buy your kid an £8 video game, living next to drug dealers, wondering if you’ll be homeless next month. Now fast forward just one year… you’re making $25K months while traveling through Canada with your family, finally living the life you’d always dreamed of.

Sounds impossible, right? That’s exactly what Duncan and Jennie did, and their story proves that your current circumstances don’t define your future. If you’ve ever felt like you have the skills and passion but just can’t figure out how to make it work, this story is for you.

TL;DR:

  • Duncan and Jennie went from filing for bankruptcy to making $290K in 9 months
  • They hit $100K in their first 3 months with their online program
  • Their business helps women overcome pelvic organ problems after trauma
  • They built a peaceful, profitable business while traveling with their young kids
  • The secret? Following a proven blueprint and being brave enough to transform themselves

I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of entrepreneurs scale their online businesses to six figures and beyond. But when I sat down with Duncan and Jennie – the power duo behind Unshaken with You – I knew their story was something special.

This isn’t your typical “quit my 9-5 and made millions” story. This is raw, real, and honestly? It brought me to tears.

Because just over a year ago, these two were standing in a bankruptcy office in Wales, living next to drug dealers, unable to buy their son an £8 video game. Today, they’re running a thriving online business from Canada, hitting $25K months while traveling with their kids, and finally living the life they’d always dreamed of.

So how did they do it? Let me take you inside their journey.

The Dream That Became a Nightmare

Duncan and Jennie had always been entrepreneurs. They ran a successful gym together in the UK – Duncan handled the physical training side, Jennie covered holistic health and emotional wellness. They were good at what they did. Really good.

But they had a bigger dream: moving to the French Alps.

In 2012, they packed everything into a van and took off. New country, new adventure, new life. Except they forgot one crucial thing – a strategy for finding clients.

(This is exactly why I created my free Masterclass on building a scalable online business – so you don’t make the same mistakes they did.)

“We had no strategy when I looked back, nothing,” Jennie told me. “Barely any money in the bank.”
She’d moved her existing clients online but hadn’t thought about where new clients would come from. And in a foreign country, without a plan, things spiraled quickly.

The stress of managing a business in a new country, the language barriers, the financial pressure – it all piled up. And then came the house fire.

When Everything Literally Goes Up in Flames

Jennie woke up one night smelling smoke. Duncan told her to go back to sleep. When he finally opened their bedroom door, the entire staircase was engulfed in flames.

They had to jump out of their bedroom window to escape.

“I was in total shock,” Jennie recalled. “Duncan threw a mattress out the window and told me to put clothes on. I just stood there thinking, ‘What should I wear?'”

In her shock, she grabbed a random sparkly clubbing top. In November. The fire crew had to give her a jacket.

The fire brigade later told them they wouldn’t have made it to the stairs if they’d tried – the toxic fumes would have gotten them first. They lost everything they owned. The insurance took months to come through.

That was just the beginning of their financial spiral.

Rock Bottom: Living Next to Drug Dealers with Two Young Kids

Eventually, Duncan and Jennie had to move back to the UK. Back to Jennie’s hometown in Wales. With a three-month-old baby, a three-year-old daughter, and Jennie dealing with three pelvic organ prolapses.

And that feeling of shame? It was crushing.

“That feeling of shame and we failed and we’ve let our kids down,” Jennie said, her voice breaking. “It wasn’t even my own father that helped us out – it was my stepdad, which felt awful.”

They ended up in a rough neighborhood. Drug dealers on either side. A neighbor who was a functioning alcoholic, with ambulances showing up every other day. A car explosion behind their house one night.

“You just don’t imagine having kids and then moving in next to drug dealers,” Jennie said. “That’d be awesome,’ you know? You just don’t think that.”

But the worst part? They had the skills and experience to build something successful. They just didn’t have a vehicle – a proven system to make it happen.

The Moment That Changed Everything

Things hit an all-time low when they had to file for bankruptcy.

But it was actually a smaller moment that became the breaking point for Duncan.

His son Luca came into the kitchen and asked for a video game that cost about £8. Duncan had to tell him no – he couldn’t afford it.

“I was in tears,” Duncan told me, visibly emotional. “I couldn’t give my son a bloody game for nine bloody pounds.”

They couldn’t exist like that anymore. Something had to change.

That’s when Jennie found my program.

“Who Is This Sunny Chick?”

Jennie studied me for months before she ever reached out. When she finally came to Duncan and said, “This is the program. We’re gonna do it,” people thought she’d lost her mind.

“You’re bankrupt and you’re gonna go invest in a program?” they said. “Have you lost your mind?”

But here’s what I’ve learned about people who’ve hit rock bottom – when you know, you know. And Jennie knew.

Duncan? He was a bit more skeptical.

“She’s looking at me like, ‘Who is this Sunny chick?'” Jennie laughed. “But I was like, no, I trust her. And Duncan was like, ‘Oh, okay.'”

But Duncan trusted Jennie. And when she said she had a feeling about something, he listened.

“I was literally like, ‘Oh, fuck,'” Duncan admitted. “But I knew when she says something like that and she says she has a feeling, this is it. We’re going on another journey.”

They made it work. They found a way to invest in themselves. And within three months of joining my program, they hit $100,000 in revenue.

Finding Their Niche: The Thing Right in Front of Them

One of the things I always tell my students is that your niche is often right in front of you. It comes from your experience, your expertise, and the transformation you’ve already created in your own life.

For Jennie, that transformation was healing her three pelvic organ prolapses after giving birth.

She and Duncan had successfully rehabilitated her condition using their combined expertise in physical training and holistic health. They didn’t even realize this was a “thing” – that most women are told these conditions can’t be healed and will only get worse.

“We didn’t know there was a belief on the planet that this couldn’t be healed,” Jennie explained. “We just did what we do.”

Jennie was checked by a urogynecologist and confirmed to be fully healed. Now, every client whose healing story they share has also been medically verified by a urogynecologist or pelvic floor physical therapist.

They weren’t just selling information – they were offering a proven transformation that Jennie had lived through herself. That’s the power of experience-based expertise.

The Numbers That Still Make Them Emotional

In their previous business model, Duncan and Jennie hit a ceiling. They earned £80,000 (about $100K USD) year after year for five years straight. They couldn’t break through without taking on more clients, and they were already maxed out on time and energy.
In their new business with their online program?

In nine months, they made $290,000.

“I keep questioning, are those the right numbers?” Jennie said, almost in disbelief.

Within the first three months alone, they hit six figures. They’d only been running this new program for just over a year when we sat down for this interview.

But here’s what really gets me emotional about their story – it’s not just about the money.

The Real Transformation: Peace, Profit, and Presence

When Jennie and I talked about the turning point in their business, she didn’t mention a revenue milestone first. She talked about being in Canada with their family, traveling for five months, and having their most profitable period ever – all while feeling calm and peaceful.

“When we hit that first $25K month whilst traveling, you know, in an Airbnb all together, I didn’t have my office separate from the house anymore, kids, all of it, and just realizing, wow, we’re actually killing it,” Jennie said.

“We’re killing it financially, but we’re also really calm. We’re managing our kids. And I just thought, this is part of the adventure of life.”

She told me about some days where they’d only worked two hours between the two of them – and they’d knocked it out at the park.

This is what I call the “peaceful profitable business.” It’s not just about making money. It’s about creating a life and business that supports who you want to be – especially as a parent.

What Their Kids Are Learning

When I asked what they hope their children take away from this experience, Jennie’s answer really hit home for me.

“I just really wanted to show my children that you don’t have to follow the norm. You don’t have to follow set paths. You just follow what feels good to you, and then it will work out great,” she said.

“I wanted to role model what being inspired and loving your work and going there every single day to do it looks like. I wanted to show that it’s a possibility. And that’s what I want for them – to just always enjoy what they do.”

This is the legacy business model. It’s not just about building something that makes money. It’s about building something that reflects your values and shows your kids what’s possible.

From “You’ll Never Own a Home” to Making It Happen

People had told Duncan and Jennie for years that they’d never own their own home. They were too old (Jennie’s in her fifties, Duncan’s fifty-five). They had bankruptcy on their record. They had too much chaos in their past.

But just this week, Jennie started thinking about buying a house in the UK as their home base while they continue to travel.

“People would tell us all the time, ‘You and Duncan, you’re just not the kind of people who are ever gonna own your own home. With your track record, forget it, you’re too old,'” Jennie said.

“And it was only this week I started to really think, yeah, no, we are.”

Duncan’s Advice: Just Do It

When I asked Duncan what advice he’d give to someone thinking about starting their own online business, his answer was simple and powerful:

“If you have a skill, you have the experience, and you’ve got a passion for that, don’t fuck around. Just do it.”

He continued: “You don’t need to worry about, ‘Oh, how?’ and this. Forget all that. All you need is: I’ve got the skill, I’ve got the experience, I’ve got the passion for it.”

His other piece of advice? Be humble enough to follow a proven system to the letter.

“I may have been a banker or this and that and the other, but I don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to this,” Duncan said. “Let’s just follow what Sunny says to the letter, be humble enough to just do it, and be brave enough maybe to look inside yourself for the true transformation.”

Why This Story Matters

I’m not gonna lie – I tried to avoid crying all day during this interview. But their story is exactly why I do what I do.

My whole journey started from a pretty dark place too. At twenty-nine years old, I was having all the symptoms of a heart attack because I was so caught up in being what I thought success was. It drove me into the ground.

I knew there had to be a better way. And I knew there were people out there like Duncan and Jennie who didn’t want to drive a Lamborghini – they just wanted to live a peaceful life, be able to pay their bills, spend time with their kids, and do work that lights them up.

That’s what the peaceful profitable business model is all about.

Duncan and Jennie had the skills, the experience, and the passion. What they needed was a blueprint – a proven system that could take what they knew and turn it into a scalable online program.

They were brave enough to invest in themselves when they had every reason not to. They were humble enough to follow the process. And they did the inner work to identify their true transformation.

The result? A complete life change in less than a year.

Your Turn

If you’re sitting there with skills, experience, and passion but no clear path forward, I want you to know something:
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You don’t need to be in a perfect position financially. You don’t need to wait for the “right time.”

What you need is a proven system and the courage to follow it.

Duncan and Jennie’s story shows that it’s possible to go from rock bottom to six figures in months – not years. But it requires you to be brave enough to bet on yourself and humble enough to follow a process that works.
